The Church House
offers a unique setting for live performance and recording.
Originally constructed in 1890, the building contains a
distinctive sanctuary featuring 25-foot ceilings paneled in
3,000 square feet of old-growth California redwood. The design
and materials provide a natural reverberation and compression
that brings out the best in vocals, acoustic instruments,
electric instruments, and drums. The high ceilings also
provide room for multi-media art installation and video
projection.
A hallmark of the
church is un-amplified performance. |

“Singing
un-amplified in The Church House was the most remarkable experience for
me. The way my voice came back to my ears allowed me to hear myself as
if I were listening through headphones—I could hear so well that I found
myself playing with the tones, the notes and the feel, singing,
experimenting and entertaining myself. The best acoustics I've
experienced.”
— Laurel Bliss
This space is now available
to select musicians who can make the most of the opportunity provided by
the room. Performances and recording sessions are limited to a small
number each year.
History
|
|
Built
during the “boomtown days” of the early 1890s, the Fairhaven
Methodist Church was the center of the town’s spiritual and
community activities for seventy years. In the early 1960s the
building was sold to an antiques dealer and became the center of
a different community: that of theater enthusiasts and
counter-culture artists. During the ‘60s and ‘70s it was visited
by musicians passing through town, including Jefferson Airplane,
Joan Baez, Jimmy Buffet, and Taj Mahal. In 2000 the building was
on the brink of collapse when it changed ownership and was
completely renovated. These current owners are artists who want
the space to be a catalyst for unique musical and artistic
events. Performances can
accommodate up to 125
people. |
